France edges Germany in heavyweight Group F clash Euro 2020 | Nigeria sports news, transfers & gossips

France defeated Germany 1-0 at the Allianz Arena to open their Group F account at the 2020 European Championship with a valuable win over one of their direct rivals. The closely contested encounter was decided by an unfortunate own goal by Borussia Dortmund and Germany defender Mats Hummels after 20 minutes.

Germany struggled to find any rhythm throughout the game, with the France midfield duo of Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante dominating the middle of the park and leaving them no room to create anything meaningful. France scored twice more late on through Kylian Mbappe and Karim Benzema, but both goals were ruled out for offside.

In the first Group F fixture, Portugal handed Hungary a 3-0 thrashing at the Puskas Ferenc Arena in Budapest. Late goals from Raphael Guerreiro in the 84th minute and a Cristiano Ronaldo double in the 87th and 92nd minutes ensured Portugal got off to a winning start in the tournament they won last time.

Ronaldo’s goals for Portugal made him the first man to score in five different European Championships, and also took him past France great Michel Platini as the man with the most goals in European Championship history with 11 goals. Ronaldo is now only 5 goals away from becoming the highest scoring footballer ever in international football.
